 | Maria Alfaro |
 |
 | Maria Alfaro is from Italy and lives and teaches in Santa Cruz. She has 20 years of yoga experience, originally trained in the Iyengar method with Rodney Yee and Ashtanga in India. Drawing inspiration as a teacher from her studies with Ana Forrest, Maria’s classes are vigorous yet gentle on the lower back, neck and joints.
The pillars of Forrest Yoga are Breath, Strength, Integrity and Spirit. Maria’s classes typically begin with Pranayama, with continued focus during the class on connecting the breath to the physical and emotional experience. Warming the body up from the core is achieved through powerful and effective abdominal exercises early in the class. Strong lower abdominal muscles support the lower back and promote healthy organs. The sequencing and pacing of the class is dynamic and energizing, and includes standing postures, inversions and hip-openers. It is mindful fun!
Maria has an eclectic background that includes Reichi and Esalen massage, modern dance, performance arts, Tai Chi and Chinese Sword, and political activism and extensive travel. Multilingual and fluent in Italian and English, Maria leads yoga retreats in Southern Italy, as well as other workshops on TRE (Trauma Release Exercises), the revolutionary healing technique by bioenergetic therapist David Berceli. Phoenix Artemisia |
 |

 | Phoenix Artemisia began practicing Yoga in 1994 under the instruction of teachers from the Ashtanga tradition of Baba Hari Dass. Her personal studies in Eastern philosophy and sacred mythology buoyed her through the completion of a BA degree in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz. Phoenix began teaching soon after receiving her first teaching certificate at the Kali Ray TriYoga Academy in 1999. She has since completed two 200-hour trainings in Ashtanga Yoga at the Ashtanga Yoga Institute of Mt. Madonna in 2003 and at Parmarth Niketan ashram of Rishikesh, India in 2005, where she currently leads an annual month-long teacher training along with her teacher Mataji. Phoenix has also completed teacher training modules with senior certified Iyengar yoga teacher, Kofi Busia, who she has studied with for five years and considers a beloved primary mentor. She has been sharing Yoga internationally for the last three years and leads retreats in Greece, India, Mexico and across the U.S.
Her classes combine chanting, in-depth pranayama, philosophy and mudra within a vinyasa style asana practice informed by the precision and alignment principles of Iyengar yoga. Through her experience as a master-level Reiki facilitator, she brings the clarity and loving support of subtle energy work to the adjustments and assistance given to students with a person-centered focus. Her intention is to honor the individual practitioner by making the techniques and philosophy of yoga accessible to all, and to create an opportunity for students to experience the traditional and creative interplay of classical yoga and a light-hearted approach to the day-to-day aspects of modern life. Her classes encourage an awareness of the student's connection within a sacred community, or sangha, as a support for a joyous, conscientious and wholistic life. | Delana Thompson |
 |

 | Delana began studying vinyasa flow yoga in the year 2000 and has taught in Santa Cruz since 2005. In 2007, she encountered yin style yoga, and now incorporates this deep, mindful approach into her classes. She was first drawn to teaching yoga as an opportunity to teach peace. To this end, Delana emphasizes the spiritual and philosophical aspects of the yoga tradition. She guides students to develop self-awareness and understanding by meditatively observing body, mind, and breath with quiet concentration. "When the challenges of the asana practice - whether they are physical, mental or emotional - are met with a calm, compassionate mind, we are practicing peace," she says.
Delana's classes include both flowing and held postures, meditation, relaxation, conscious breathing, Sanskrit prayers and mantras and reference to ancient texts. She loves sharing the power and grace of yoga with others and seeing how the experience contributes to their health, happiness and peace of mind.
